University Students Sarah and Kirsten Enjoy Their Placement at Glenkeen

At Glenkeen Private Nursing Home in Randalstown we recently had the pleasure of the company of Sarah and Kirsten – both 3rd Year University Students who spent a 6 week placement in Glenkeen. Best let them both explain in their own words the experience:

Sarah’ s account of her time in Glenkeen

“Glenkeen has been one of the most enjoyable placements I have had to date. From my first day, I was a valued team member, all of the staff were friendly and went to great lengths to put my nerves at ease.

Glenkeen is an excellent practice learning setting for nursing students, not only for practical nursing skills, but also to learn the importance of therapeutic nursing whilst caring for the elderly. The nursing team and health care assistants are the perfect example of how a great team should be. They all work together with one shared vision, and that is, person centred care and empowerment of the residents to ensure that their home is safe, positive and enjoyable.

Throughout this practice learning experience I worked in close partnership with my mentor, Preshela. Preshela’s nursing knowledge is unlimited and she ensured that I met my learning outcomes and got the best out of my experience.

I feel extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of a great team. I have gained many valuable skills that I will take with me throughout my nursing career”

Kirsten’s account of her time in Glenkeen

“During my time here in Glenkeen Nursing Home I have learnt so much, especially regarding drug administration, writing and evaluating care plans and updating risk assessments.

Glenkeen Nursing Home’s nurses and staff are amazing and provide a very high quality of person-centred care to all their residents.

My mentor Heather was so supportive and helpful, I couldn’t have asked for better. This placement has definitely changed my opinion of the role of a nurse within a nursing home setting. They are very committed, hard working and caring ladies who manage to maintain a homely atmosphere for their residents while providing a professional service to 40 residents.

It has definitely been one of my best placements yet and I will miss the staff and residents now that I am leaving”
