Parkin Cake Anyone? Clonlee Monday Club Celebrate Guy Fawkes Night
Today we celebrated Guy Fawkes night with a lot of discussion about traditions and food. Audrey and Terry had a lot of fun stories about growing up in England and making a ‘Guy’ to put in an old pram or cart and going around the neighbours asking “Penny for the Guy”. Laura and Carol said they never did this so were very interested in this tradition.
Fireworks were plentiful then with Catherine Wheels and Sky Rockets being the favourite ones to get. Terry told everyone about the candle light parade to the bonfire and the food that was served during the evening – treacle toffee, toasted mallows, sausage rolls and Parkin cake.
As no one had heard of it Terry told us Parkin Cake is a gingerbread cake made with treacle and oatmeal which originated in Leeds. Everyone said it was a very interesting morning and thanked Terry and Audrey for all the stories.
Remember, remember the fifth of November,
Gunpowder treason and plot.
We see no reason
Why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.
